What are the best seat cushions for piriformis pain relief?

What are the best pillows for sciatica pain relief?

[The quick answer] The Miracle Cushion from Amazon is in our opinion the best seat cushion for piriformis pain relief and sciatica pain relief on the market.

[The long answer] The best seat cushion for sciatica you should buy depends on your specific needs. You want to ask your self a few questions first.

  • How many hours per day do you sit?
  • Do you need the sciatica pillow for your daily commute in your car? If so, for how long?
  • Is the sciatica cushions for your office, home or both?
  • Do you live in a hot climate or a cold climate? You might want a piriformis/sciatica pillow with Gel.
  • What is your budget? How much are you able to spend on your sciatica or piriformis pain relief?

Once you have answered these questions, you will be in a much better place to know what kind of sciatica cushion or piriformis pillow is best for you.

So now that we have answered your questions about piriformis/sciatica cushions. Let’s talk about some cushions for my piriformis pain relief. I will start from the beginning.

This is my story about how piriformis syndrome started me on the path to my eventual piriformis pain relief.

I’ve told the story about my first piriformis syndrome symptoms on this site before but it’s worth telling again. I was playing tennis with my brother one night under the lights in Central Florida. We were actually having a very competitive match. He hit a shot that was just out of my reach. I scrambled as quickly as I could and lunged at the ball for a backhand.

I’m right-handed so I landed on my left foot. As I did I felt a pop in my left hip area. Just a few short hours later I was, unfortunately, experiencing the worst pain of my life. Piriformis pain is excruciating as I’m sure that you know. You would not have come to this site otherwise.

So I am going to do my best to help you not only to help get rid of the pain. But most importantly, Help you with your long-term piriformis pain relief. The idea is to do the things necessary to stop it from happening. It is always better to do preventative maintenance instead of just masking the true problem.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

If you are having sciatica pain be sure to scroll to the bottom of this page for more information on seat cushions for sciatica pain relief.

My story continued…..

What followed was three years of on-again-off-again injuries (more on than off). Something that I realized after a while was that there were products out there that would help to ease my pain. Having a good seat cushion for my long daily commute. The cushion that I use takes the pressure off of my tailbone as you can see in the illustration above. It is one of the single biggest products that has really helped with my pain relief.

I would rest for weeks at a time only to think that I was better. But because I did not understand the mentality of preventing piriformis syndrome from happening in the first place. I would try to lead an active lifestyle but it was only a matter of time until I experienced the usual piriformis syndrome symptoms again.

I remember trying to ride my bike on a local trail. I rode for nearly 20 miles without a problem. Yet somehow while coming to a stop so that I could use my kickstand, I twisted my leg just right (or wrong) so that I had a piriformis syndrome attack. Cue several days of writhing in pain until my piriformis muscle finally loosened up enough for me to stand up and walk gingerly.

When I have had serious piriformis syndrome attacks in the past I usually spend at least a day or two using a cane. I never imagined that that would be my life at the age of 39.

Piriformis Syndrome Exercises

The good news about my story is that we don’t have to live our lives in pain.

I have learned many piriformis syndrome exercises that will bring you immediate pain relief. Not just that but I am sharing them with you here on my site for free. If you have not already done so I urge you to go to our piriformis stretch video series page.

There you will learn the techniques that you need to have in your toolkit so that you will not end up using a cane like I did at the age of 39.

I’ll never forget the weekend that I had planned to go to the Kennedy Space Center with my family. I was swimming in the hotel pool, a very nice one by the way, with a huge island in the middle of it. Somehow I threw out my piriformis muscle and spent the rest of the weekend in bed.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

My young daughter and wife had to carry all of the luggage for me down to our vehicle because I was almost completely unable to walk.

Luckily I was able to limp my way down to our car and my wife drove us back home. My daughter never did get to see Kennedy Space Center like my wife and I did when we were her age. My wife and I were able to travel there for field trips to see shuttle launches when we were in elementary school.

I’m so happy that I am once again able to walk without fear of injury. Hopefully one day soon I will be able to take my daughter back to the Kennedy Space Center Museum.

I actually grew up near Cape Canaveral. My father was stationed near there during the 70s. I remember rocket launches and playing in the dirt, riding our bikes all around the neighborhood and having a lot of fun with my fellow neighborhood kids.

What I could never have imagined then was how difficult growing older could become. It’s actually quite amazing when I look back on my childhood and realize how quickly that I could recover from injuries. That is certainly not the experience that I have as an active adult in my forties.

Although it may seem like I need to constantly do piriformis syndrome exercises in order to stay active, at least compared to my youth, I take comfort in the knowledge that my symptoms are easy to deal with if I stick to my routine.

I am going to review four seat cushions on this page that have helped me to deal with my piriformis syndrome with varying results.

I have seen used versions of all of these piriformis cushions on Amazon for less than the listed retail prices here on the site. Piriformis Cushion #1

Premium Memory Foam Piriformis Cushion & Sciatica Cushion

Amazons official title for this piriformis cushion is “CYLEN -Memory Foam Bamboo Charcoal-Infused Ventilated Orthopedic Seat Cushion for Car and Office Chair – Washable & Breathable Cover“. Yeah, I’m just gonna call it Piriformis Cushion #1.

One thing that occurs to me is that this would be a very useful piriformis cushion for someone who is unable to exercise or is confined to a wheelchair. The dimensions fit nicely in a wheelchair and the rubber bottom makes sure that it sticks in place.

One of my fears as I get older is how I am going to cope with not being able to do my piriformis syndrome exercises and stretches as I age. This piriformis cushion will certainly help for those of you who are immobile.

A few key points about this piriformis cushion are;

  • It is made of breathable and comfortable material.
  • 5-year warranty.
  • The inside is made of memory foam so that it will retain its shape.
  • It comes with a carrying handle so that it is mobile.

One of the few drawbacks about this piriformis cushion is that it may flatten out over time especially if you are a heavyset person. That’s not to say that it does not have its advantages but if you are heavyset for overweight you may want to look at the other three piriformis cushions on this page. Having said that this one will stay in place better than any of the other piriformis cushions because of its rubber bottom. Just be aware that it might not hold it’s shaping as well as some of the other piriformis cushions over long periods of time.

Another great use for this condition would use it on a motorized shopping cart while you are doing your grocery shopping. Basically, if you’re sitting on something that moves this is going to be your best bet due to its stability.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

Really you can’t go wrong with this piriformis cushion it’s great for sciatica relief, keeping your spine aligned and of course for helping to keep your piriformis muscle stabilized. Not to mention a host of other ailments but they don’t have much to do with piriformis syndrome so we won’t get into that.

The price of this piriformis cushion is affordable and you don’t have to take my word for it, it has 4 1/2 stars on Amazon and over 2000 customer reviews. Just click on the picture above and check them out for yourself.

Premium Memory Foam Piriformis Cushion

Piriformis Cushion #2

Piriformis Cushion Car Seat

Amazon likes to call this piriformis cushion “Car Seat Cushion with Strap | Driver’s Wedge with Coccyx Support for Back, Hip and Leg Pain | Orthopedic “Clever” Memory Foam with Breathable Mesh Cover, Never Goes Flat | 17.5″ x 15″ x 2.5″”

Wow, it must’ve taken someone a month just to come up with that name. As usual, I’m going to shorten it by quite a bit and just call it Piriformis Cushion #2.

This is the only piriformis cushion on this page that comes with an adjustable strap that you place on the back of your seat. The gray cover is removable and washable. Which is great because I live in Florida and do a lot of outdoor activities so you know what that means. It needs frequent washing because of how much I use it and The material holds up just fine.

I’m over 200 pounds and the memory foam in this cushion supports my weight with no problem whatsoever. It holds it’s shape in spite of my hefty frame and frequent use.

Seat Cushions for Piriformis

All of the piriformis cushions on this review page are priced similarly somewhere in the mid to high $40 range but I’m sure if you click the picture through to Amazon you may be able to find a better deal.

This piriformis cushion is actually a #1 bestseller on Amazon at 4 1/2 stars and with over 500 reviews you can be sure that you are getting your monies worth.

Some key points about this piriformis cushion are:

  • The wedge design will be more comfortable for some people than the other piriformis cushions on this page.
  • It is made out of memory foam that keeps it’s shape for years.
  • It’s only 2 1/2 inches high so that you’re not elevating your position too much.
  • It has a molded “Clever” foam core.
  • Adjustable strap that secures it to your seat.

I would recommend this piriformis cushion for use in your car or in other tight areas so that you’re not bumping your head on the ceiling. It’s great if you are tall like me although if you have a smaller frame you may want to look at one of the other piriformis cushions on this page for your car. They tend to work a little better.

Piriformis Cushion #3

Piriformis Cushion Donut Ring

Amazon calls this the “Aylio Donut Ring Comfort Foam Medical Seat Cushion with Contours for the Legs and Tail Bone”. I like to call it “The Donut Ring” or just Piriformis Cushion #3.

Probably the best thing about this particular piriformis cushion is the fact that it is rigid yet comfortable. It’s also quite sturdy and holds its shape really well.

The depressions in my thighs make it extremely comfortable. In my opinion, this is the most comfortable piriformis cushion that I reviewed.

It has a cover that is removed by a zipper. The cover is washable which is a must of course.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

Some people actually prefer to use donut shaped cushions such as this one and I can clearly see why. The indentations for your thighs might take a little while to get used to but they definitely help support the piriformis muscle.

As with all of the piriformis cushions on this page, it is also good for many other uses but I’d like to stick to its properties for piriformis syndrome sufferers. You’ll find that the elevation is just right for your thigh and glut area. This will relieve pressure on your sciatic nerve and help to keep your piriformis muscle from locking up. This is especially helpful when you are having piriformis syndrome symptoms but are not having a full-on attack.

As you can see we have several different varieties of piriformis cushions on this page and this one might be the most interesting.

Some key points about The Donut Ring piriformis cushion are:

  • It’s donut shaped. Duh!
  • It reduces pressure on the legs hips and tailbone area.
  • It has a removable cover that is washable.

This is another piriformis cushion that would work well in your car especially if you have a little bit of a smaller frame. Taller guys and gals might want to go with the wedge piriformis cushion that is listed above this one.

I would also recommend this for use while traveling by plane or train. It would also work great in an office chair.

The Donut Ring is also highly rated on Amazon at 4 1/2 stars and has well over 300 customer reviews just click through and check for yourself for more info.

Piriformis Cushion #4

Orthopedic Piriformis Cushion

This is Amazon’s “Aylio Coccyx Orthopedic Comfort Foam Seat Cushion for Lower Back, Tailbone and Sciatica Pain Relief”. Umm… we’ll re-name it Piriformis Cushion #4!

If you are like me and you sit at your computer all day and all night, this will help you to do that with no pain. Another plus about this piriformis cushion is that it is relatively thin. Other then the wedge piriformis cushion listed above this is the thinnest one on this page. Of course, that means that this is a good one for taller people like myself. It helps to keep me from bumping my head while driving. This is something that I have had problems with in the past when I have used thicker piriformis cushions.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

I have been dealing with piriformis syndrome symptoms for years now. I have a job where I spend a lot of time at my desk working on my PC because, as you may have guessed, I make websites for a living. Que shameless plug,  www.stpetedesign.com OK back to whats important. I have tried a few other piriformis cushions but they just never did the trick. After trying local products that didn’t work or last very long I found this piriformis cushion which had a lot of great reviews on Amazon.

I do have to admit that I am a big Amazon shopper. So I gave it a try. If you have ever dealt with the pain of a piriformis syndrome attack, you would understand the need to find a great product that helps to relieve the pain. I received the piriformis cushion via FedEx very fast and in perfect condition. This piriformis cushion is by far and away from Amazon’s best seller with a 4 1/2 star rating and over 8,600 reviews!

Some key points about this piriformis cushion #4 are:

  • I felt a difference with pressure and posture immediately.
  • It keeps my posture in such a way that it relieves the tension on my piriformis muscle.
  • It has worked so well that I have one at work and one in my car (even though I’m tall).
  • It works really good for long drives.
  • This piriformis cushion is washable.

It is kind of pricey. Seeing as how it is just a pillow. And it only comes in one color. So I was not able to match it up in my car, wouldn’t it be nice if these piriformis cushions came in various colors? But with that said, it is made of a good quality material. The stitching is very sturdy. The piriformis cushion itself is a very good quality foam.

I have put many hours on mine and it still retains its shape and pain relief qualities. I would recommend this piriformis cushion to anyone who has to sit for long periods of time and is dealing with piriformis syndrome or sciatic pain. At the very least take a look at all the piriformis cushion products that Amazon has to offer. They have way more than the few that I put on here. But I can only review so many.

Seat Cushions for Sciatica

Just a quick note that these piriformis cushions are not a replacement for using the daily piriformis stretches and daily piriformis exercises we have made available for free on this site. Having said that they are a great help especially when you are traveling or sitting for long periods of time.

  1. We welcome any questions you have about any Piriformis Syndrome related subject or products that we offer. Thank you and good luck on your journey to permanent pain relief.

    1. Hi, Joe, I appreciate your experiences, work and recommendations just in the interest of helping others. I suffer greatly with Piriformis Syndrome. I, after reading your recommendations and reviews, have decided I was ready to order Cusion #4, but then I noticed in their title they talk about back pain, tailbone and sciatica…with no mention directly regarding piriformis. I just want to make sure I’m getting one that’s going to offer some relief for my piriformis. My pain is most exacerbated by sitting and applying pressure on my buttock on that side, right where the seat applies pressure. Still recommend this one? thanks for taking the time for me. ~~Wendy

  2. Hi thanks for sharing. Been suffering with this for 6 months. Due to the stretches I been keeping the hobbling down to 6 out of 5 days, and recently started using muscle relaxers. Started seeing an Ortho recently who just did an MRI today. The piriformis goes into a ball and is so painful I know that is the issue but have to go through the steps. Strectches help but not enough for my condition. Waiting room chairs can set it off so quickly can barely walk after 1/2 hr in typical chair. Heat helps it as do the stretches but hard to do at work and at doctor offices etc. Interested in the cushions to help reduce flair ups, but thought a true piriformis cushion would have the cut out on either the left or right cheek,(where the wallet might be position in the good old days). Thanks

    1. Hi Dave,

This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MyjVqDxfSc shows a “spinal twist”. Start at 2:48 into the video. This is not one of our videos but it may help in addition to the other videos shown on our “Stretches” page.

When I was in physical therapy Dr. Hartley used this stretch to “pop” my back into place. The relief was immediate. I’m sure this won’t work for everyone but it is one of my go to stretches whenever I am having a piriformis attack.

    1. Hi Dave,

Because of the amount of spam comments that we receive, all users must be approved before they can comment. You should be able to post comments without any issues now.

  3. Thank you for compiling this helpful information. I have been suffering flares for years and have only just learned what it is that I dealing with, now that I cannot function through the pain. Regarding the cushion reccomendations, I am a big girl (both tall and Reubenesque) I am driving 3 to 5 hours a day and many hours per week in Dr.s waiting rooms (the worst) as I am caregiver of 3. Which of these cushions stands out in your experience for my situation? Thank you for your time and consideration.

    1. Hi Deon,

Take a look at “Sciatica Cushion for Pain Relief #3” above. I love the memory foam and the price is very reasonable. Another good one is “Piriformis Cushion #1” which I personally use more than the others. Unfortunately they look to be currently out of stock so you may have some trouble finding that one.

Thanks for coming to our site and I hope you feel better soon! Be sure to take a look at the stretch videos that we have on the site as well. They were instrumental in helping me to get my Piriformis Syndrome under control. In fact I would say that they are even more helpful than the cushions plus they are free!

  4. worst one and see how it looks or how it functions so that’ll be alright the only thing I noticed is I’m laying back more in the tractor when I’m driving but that’s alright I only had one armrest with this seat that’s how the tractor came the arm rests are like $75 apiece most guys ripped them off I don’t I just keep them folded up for the most part and the one is off on that side every once in a while I bump my elbow on it and here hit my funny bone on it we may do something there yet I don’t know but for the time being we have a half-decent cushion on here and I’ve got these wonderful I can’t say enough about these steps for how much of a pain the old steps were these are worth every penny I don’t care what they cost I might get us another set for the other side the handrail I might order yet – we’re still thinking about that so nice I’m glad it’s

  5. I drive 4 hrs per day and get pain in my butt and the back of my thighs. I’m thinking about getting cushion #3. It seems the less pressure I have the more relief I have when I move side to side lifting one butt cheek at a time to relieve pressure as I’m driving.

  6. I am a retired chiropractor who became disabled due to what turned out to be a raging piriformis syndrome. It was misdiagnosed as a herniated disc, and I had that disc removed with absolutely no result, only continued buttock, thigh and leg pain and foot numbness. That was ten years ago and I have suffered 24/7 since that time. I am now getting the first proven results for relief of this syndrome through the magic of dry needling as performed by my PT. I highly recommend this modality, and I am here posting because I want to buy the best cushion to take the pressure off the piriformis muscle while it heals.
